If you are planning an Indian wedding from London, Toronto, Dubai or anywhere else outside India, the first question is rarely about décor or guest lists. It is simpler and more anxious than that: where do we even begin, and how far in advance?

A wedding planned from abroad cannot follow the same rhythm as one planned two hours from the venue. Site visits take longer to arrange. Vendor meetings need to work across time zones. Decisions that would take a week in person can take a month over email. This timeline is built specifically for that reality, drawn from weddings our wedding planner for NRIs has planned for couples living on four different continents.

Why NRI Wedding Planning Needs a Different Timeline

A domestic Indian wedding can often be planned in 6 to 8 months. For an NRI wedding, we recommend starting at 12 months, for three reasons. First, venue availability at the properties NRI couples typically prefer, five-star resorts and boutique heritage properties, books out fast, sometimes 10 to 12 months ahead for peak season dates. Second, international guests need long lead times to plan travel, take leave, and book flights affordably. Third, and most overlooked, every decision takes longer when it happens over video calls across a 5- to 12-hour time difference.

Months 12 to 10: The Foundation

This is where you lock the two decisions everything else depends on: your date and your venue. Work backwards from your guests’ availability, particularly if you have elderly family members who need more runway to plan international travel. This is also the right time to have your first serious conversation with a planner, not to finalise details, but to understand your options and get a realistic budget framework in rupees, not just a number that sounds reasonable in dollars or pounds.

Months 9 to 7: Design and Vendors

Design and Vendors

With your venue locked in, this is when your wedding’s visual identity is built. A good wedding planner for NRIs  will walk you through design direction over video call, using real photographs and 360-degree venue walkthroughs rather than asking you to imagine it. Vendor contracts for the harder-to-book categories, photography, entertainment, and premium décor teams, should be confirmed in this window.

Months 6 to 4: Logistics and Guests

Logistics and Guests

This is when your guest list moves from a spreadsheet to a real logistics plan. Save the dates should already be out. Now is the time to finalise accommodation blocks, understand visa requirements for any international guests attending from outside India, and confirm travel and hospitality arrangements for family flying in from multiple countries.

Months 3 to 1: Final Execution

The pre-wedding shoot, if you are having one, typically happens in this window. Final guest counts get locked for catering. Your NRI wedding services should be conducting a full venue walkthrough, in person or virtually, around the four-week mark. This is also when the wedding week’s minute-by-minute schedule gets built and shared with your family.

The Week Of

By now, your only job should be showing up. If you are exchanging messages about vendor confirmations or budget line items in the final week, something in the process broke earlier. A well-run NRI wedding  with the best wedding planner for NRIs means the couple and their parents are present for the celebration, not managing it from the sidelines.
